IMPORT SPECIALISTS: NISSAN 180SX
The JDM version of the Nissan 240sx, the 180sx shares many of the same characteristics with its North American counterpart but is powered by a different engine. The 180sx was originally released in 1989 with Nissan's 1.8 litre CA18DET engine but was later upgraded to the 2.0 litre SR20DE and SR20DET engines. Although the engine displacement no longer match the car's name, Nissan made the decision to keep the 180sx badge.
The 180sx shared the same chassis and body as the North American 240sx and gained popularity for its handling and styling without the drawback of the underpowered KA family of Nissan engines. The 180sx also shared a lot of commonalities with its sister car the Nissan Silvia. The only real difference between the Nissan Silvia and the 180sx were the pop-up head lights on the 180sx and the fastback roof and hatchback. In fact, the cars were so similar that many accidented 180sxs would be fixed using Silvia frontclips because the Silvia frontclips were cheaper and more common in Japan. The resulting vehicles were so common they were given the unofficial name "SilEighty".
Although true 180sxs are still a rarity in North America, many car enthusiests who modify their 240sxs have changed their badges along with their engines. In the end, however, the 180sx was as popular in Japan as the 240sx was here in North America for many of the same reasons.
